Peter Sherrington is the Research Director of the Rocky Mountain Eagle Research Foundation. In 1992, he first became aware of the major migration of golden eagles and other raptors through the front ranges of the Rocky Mountains at Mount Lorette. Subsequently he has coordinated the work of hundreds of volunteers involved in studying and mapping this migration route.

Since the project started, volunteers have counted 124,000 migranting golden eagles and 34,000 other migrant birds of prey from 18 species.  Over 2,850 days (almost 30,000 hours) have been spent at the principal sites in spring and fall. Since the fall of 2006, 4 fall and 2 spring counts have also been conducted at the spectacular South Livingstone-Piitaistakis site near the Crowsnest Pass and in fall 2007 a record 5,445 migrant Golden Eagles were counted there.

During the last 10 years, Peter’s work studying raptor migration has been recognised with a Green Shield Award from the Alberta Department of Social Development, a Wilderness Defenders Award from the Alberta Wilderness Association (of which he is a past President), the 2005 Alberta Centenial Medal, the 2008 Alberta Emerald Award for Corporate or Institutional Leadership and the 2008 J. Dewey Soper Award from the Alberta Society of Professional Biologists.

Peter  lives in the hamlet of Beaver Mines in southwestern Alberta.
